Exmouth Rural East Neighbourhood has a population of approximately 7,297. The neighbourhood consists of the villages of Budleigh Salterton, East Budleigh, Colaton Raleigh and Otterton. The population is very varied . It continues to expand with new developments being built in number of locations. Younger families occupy many of the new houses with older communities being more focused in the established areas of the neighbourhood. Much of the activity, commercial, social and policing is focused in Budleigh Salterton itself due to the concentration of shops and licensed premises.

The Exmouth Rural East Neighbourhood Team is made up of Police Community Support Officers Chantalle Major, and Sarah Trayhurn. It is one of six Neighbourhood Teams supervised by Sergeant Richard Stonecliffe and are based at Exmouth police station, which is the main station for the Exmouth Sector.

Exmouth Rural East is a safe place to live with the likelihood of being a victim of crime being well below the national average. In addition the incidents of serious crime are very low indeed. The main problems are spontaneous incidents of vandalism committed by those passing through the area and anti social behaviour. There are also problems with fear of crime, especially during the late evening. Some of this is created by differing views of what is acceptable causing relatively low level behaviour being interpreted as a significant threat. The Exmouth Rural East Neighbourhood Team are working alongside both the community and partner agencies to address many of these issues.
