From May 2013, the following changes were made to the crime categories:
I) The violent crime category was renamed "violence and sexual offences"
2) A new category for "bicycle theft" was created which previously fell within "other theft"
3) A new category for "theft from the person" was created which previously fell within "other theft"
4) Public disorder and weapons were then split into two new categories; "public order" and "possession of weapons"
5) Both "other firearms offences" and "other knives offences" which were in "other crime" were moved into "possession of weapons".

The Ottery St Mary Rural neighbourhood consists of a number of attractive villages set within stunning East Devon countryside. The population numbers about 14000 people and consists of a mixture of young and old, families, local workers and commuters. Villages tend to be traditional in nature, often with established small businesses and shops. The farming industry features heavily with many widely scattered family run farms. The majority of residents own their own homes and the area is quite affluent. New residents continue to be attracted by the beautiful countryside and its convenient access to the East Devon coastline, City of Exeter, motorway and Exeter International Airport. The area continues to thrive and grow with a mass of new developments in the area such as the Skypark, Science Park and the new town of Cranbrook. This is a safe place to live and work with crime being low compared to the national average.
