East End

The East End area of Plymouth lies between the Plym estuary and Sutton Harbour / the City Centre. It occupies a strategic location on major transport routes to the city from the east and north east. Plymouth’s East End comprises the residential communities of Cattedown, Coxside and Prince Rock, together with commercial and industrial areas centred around the port and mixed use areas to the east of Sutton Harbour. This section of the report focuses on East Coxside (West Coxside is covered in the Sutton Harbour section).

The East End’s economy has been based on successive waves of industrial development, including shipbuilding, quarrying, chemical industries, fishing, fish processing and warehousing, and it still has a strong industrial base. The East End was declared a Renewal Area in May 2000 following the preparation of a Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment and extensive public consultation.

East End/Eastern Gateway Area Action Plan

The City Council’s vision for the East End is to create a sustainable, mixed-use urban district in Plymouth’s East End that is well connected to the waterfront; provides a high quality Eastern Gateway to the city and maintains a thriving commercial port.
