Crime by Postcode

Search any UK postcode for free to see local crime rates, crime types, monthly trends and area comparisons. UKCrimeStats uses official data published by the UK police forces (data.police.uk) and updates every month as new figures are released.

What "crime by postcode" means on UKCrimeStats

When you search by postcode, we map your postcode to its precise grid reference and aggregate every police-recorded crime report inside a configurable radius (1 mile by default). That gives you a true neighbourhood-level picture rather than a force-wide or constituency-wide average. The same postcode is also resolved to its surrounding LSOA, MSOA, ward, local authority, constituency and police force so you can compare your immediate area against larger geographies.

How accurate are postcode-level crime locations?

Police-recorded crime locations on data.police.uk are deliberately anonymised — each crime is snapped to a generalised "snap point" near the original location to protect victims and witnesses. This means an individual crime icon on a map is approximate, but aggregate counts at postcode, neighbourhood and street level are reliable indicators of local crime patterns. For a more granular view, UKCrimeStats also offers heatmaps and rolling 12-month aggregations that smooth out month-to-month noise.

What is a "crime rate"?

A crime rate normalises raw crime counts by population so different areas can be compared fairly. UKCrimeStats expresses crime rates per 1,000 residents using the latest ONS mid-year population estimates at the relevant geography. We also report percentile rankings — for example, "this postcode has more crime than 73% of similar postcodes nationally" — which is often easier to interpret than the raw rate.

How often is the data updated?

The Home Office releases new police-recorded crime data on data.police.uk around the middle of each month, covering crimes reported two months prior. UKCrimeStats ingests, geocodes and aggregates the new month's data within 24–48 hours of release, so the figures you see for any postcode reflect the most recent published month for every police force.

Why use UKCrimeStats?

UKCrimeStats has been analysing UK crime data since 2011 and is used by homebuyers, renters, estate agents, surveyors, insurers, security firms, journalists and academic researchers. Unlike the official portal, we provide percentile rankings, 12-month rolling aggregations, monthly trend forecasting, road-by-road breakdowns, accident hotspot analysis and integration with property prices, broadband speeds and energy consumption — all on the same map for any postcode in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
